PATRIOTIC HOLIDAY

 U.S. Patriotic Holidays

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May and honors the men and women who died while serving in the United States military. It is a day of remembrance and reflection for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Because Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance, it is generally considered more appropriate to avoid saying "Happy Memorial Day.” Instead, consider thoughtful alternatives such as:

o   Wishing you a meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

o   We wish you a beautiful Memorial Day weekend.

o   Sending warm thoughts on this day of remembrance.

Flag Day

Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 and commemorates the adoption of the United States flag by the Second Continental Congress in 1777. This day recognizes the history, symbolism, and significance of the American flag. Although Flag Day has been celebrated since the Civil War era, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day in 1916. While it is not a federal holiday, Pennsylvania recognizes it as a state holiday.

For patriotic organizations such as the VFW Auxiliary, Flag Day is a special opportunity to proudly display the American flag at home, at work, and within our communities, while honoring those who serve to protect the nation it represents.

Independence Day (Fourth of July)

Independence Day, celebrated on July 4 each year, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. This historic moment signified the birth of the United States as an independent nation.

The Fourth of July is a time for Americans to celebrate our country’s freedom, history, and the ideals upon which it was founded. Greetings such as "Happy Fourth of July” or "Happy Independence Day” are commonly shared as we celebrate our nation and its independence.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day traces its origins to the end of World War I. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, fighting ceased with the signing of the armistice that ended the war. Today, Veterans Day is observed on November 11 and is dedicated to honoring all U.S. military veterans who have served our country.

Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day is a celebratory occasion recognizing the service and sacrifice of living veterans. Because of this, it is appropriate to say, "Happy Veterans Day” in the same spirit as other holiday greetings such as "Merry Christmas” or "Happy Thanksgiving.”
